Challenge
Commercial businesses and large institutions in the City of Philadelphia have been required by law to recycle since 1994. However, many businesses were unaware of their legal obligation or struggled to find information on the city’s website about requirements for compliance and assistance available to comply. The City of Philadelphia’s Recycling Office sought technical assistance and resources to edit, update and reorganize the commercial recycling webpage content, which was scattered across 60+ individual webpages, to make for a more streamlined and more functional business recycling tool.
Project Description
Guided by Philadelphia’s Recycling Office, iSpring led content development for a business recycling toolkit for Philadelphia businesses to use as a resource to implement or enhance recycling at their facilities. The how-to recycling guide for the city’s businesses, institutions, and large residential buildings was designed for building managers and business owners and lays out the step-by-step process of creating an effective recycling program and making it work, from complying with city regulations to achieving employee buy-in.
In addition to organizing the toolkit and writing toolkit copy, iSpring conducted extensive interviews, held site visits and led roundtables with local businesses to develop case studies and best practices. The real-life case studies highlight 6 different types of businesses and organizations that are making recycling work in Philadelphia and serve as a resource to other commercial entities who must implement recycling at their facility.
Results
The completed toolkit was released in May 2014 and was used as a tool to engage commercial businesses and other organizations required to comply with the law across the city. You can explore the toolkit in its entirety below:
